I am a musician. I am a world traveler.
“….Irene Chen, whose superlative musicianship shone through each phrase(Mozart Serenade No. 11 K375 in Eb)... Chen inhabits the world of the consummate professional." Cue, 30 June 2013. South Africa
Winner of International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition (2009), Irene started her performing career as a soloist, a chamber music musician and as a principal in professional orchestras.
Her playing is said to be “warm, sensitive, thoughtful and inspirational”. In 2011 Irene was chosen from hundreds of applicants to be part of YouTube Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas in Sydney, Australia, which is one of the hottest topic in 2011 as it was the second time of YouTube’s project of calling musicians around the world to participate in this event. It was "the most-watched live music concert on the Internet", and "the most frequently viewed concert in the history of the video-sharing website".
Along with the 2011 YTSO concert, Irene was also chosen by Tourism Australia for it’s adjunct project “Making Tracks”; Irene cooperated with Australian Singer Andy Bull composing a song inspired by the natural beauty in Australia.
Irene started her clarinet playing at the age of 11 in Taiwan with CheNan Cheng, and graduated from Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music under Howard Klug with Master degree. In 2009 she was the prizewinner of the International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition in Porto, Portugal. The passion of music and the desire to share the beauty of the arts to people has brought Irene to many places in the world, including Sydney, Durban, Berlin, Dresden, Marseille, Paris, Beijing, etc. In 2017 Irene's Asia Recital Tour in Taipei, Shanghai and Beijing featuring Stephan Hodel's new clarinet piece "Valse Bleue" had received great acclaim.
She was the principal clarinet of Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in South Africa, the principal clarinet DunShan Symphonic Wind Orchestra, and currently the sub principal of Orchestral Academia China in Beijing.
